The core of 36th PhD cycle in Asian and African Studies is to educate a new generation of prospective experts on Eurasia and Northern Africa. Graduates are trained to acquire all the necessary skills to become influential experts and knowledge brokers in the study of these regions. PhD in Asian and African Studies aims to build and develop solid theoretical and methodological skills; to support students in developing original research with interdisciplinary and transcultural perspective; to integrate students into ongoing joint activities with International partners in order to prepare them for their successful interaction in international settings.
Languages permanently offered in the PhD programme: Arabic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Korean, Hebrew, Georgian, Japanese, Hindi, Persian, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Turkish, Urdu. We also have expertise with regard to Aramaic, Russian and Yiddish.
Candidates are required to have certified English proficiency at least B2 level - under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) - at the time of enrolment, except for the possibility of acquiring it subsequently, by no later than December 31st, 2020, otherwise they will be excluded from the PhD Programme (see art. 3, paragraph 6 of the call).
Candidates are required to specify in the online application the knowledge of one of the following languages (ancient or modern): Arabic, Aramaic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Georgian, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Persian, Russian, Sanskrit, Thai, Tibetan, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese, Modern Greek.
Duration: 3 years
Gross amount of the scholarship approximately € 56,500.00 (50% increase in the monthly scholarship for research periods abroad and annual budget for national and international research activities - € 1,534.00 during the 2nd and 3rd year- not included).
Candidates will be admitted to the PhD programme after passing a selection process (evaluation of academic qualifications, written and/or oral examination) according to the conditions indicated in the call.
