The Institute of Physics at the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) invite applications for the position of an

Assistant Professor (Juniorprofessor)

of Experimental Physics - X-Ray Scattering at Soft Matter.

(W1 with tenure-track to a W2 position LBesG)

We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated scientific achievements and the capacity for independent research at the highest international level and have special interest in modern methods and X-ray sources for investigating molecular structure- and function-building processes in soft matter. Applicants will be expected to interact with the existing research groups in soft matter science (physics and chemistry) at JGU and at the MPI-P. In addition, they are expected to participate in the state-funded top-level research areas Mainz Institute of Multiscale Modeling (M3ODEL) and TopDyn – Topology and Dynamics as well as in the recently established Research Training Group GRK 2516 Control of structure formation in soft matter at and through interfaces. It is also possible to work with other research centers such as the Max Planck Graduate Center with the Johannes Gutenberg University (MPGC).

The successful candidate will initially be responsible for the X-Ray Scattering Laboratory at the MPI-P and develop an independent research profile in experimental soft matter at the MPI-P and at JGU. After a positive tenure evaluation, the position will be converted to a tenured professorship at JGU.

The successful applicant is expected to teach in the programs offered by the Institute of Physics, in particular in the field of experimental physics. Applicants are therefore expected to have the necessary commitment and didactic skills. The State of Rhineland-Palatinate and Johannes Gutenberg University are committed to close personal mentoring of students and therefore expect a strong presence of teaching staff at the university. A team-oriented and cooperative work attitude, strong communication skills and the willingness to assume responsibility – including further professional development in accordance with JGU’s leadership guidelines – is therefore expected.

JGU aims to increase the quota of women in research and teaching, and hence encourages female scientists to apply.

Disabled candidates with appropriate qualifications will be given priority.
